Guru Deva Priya Deva Sai Deva Dhaya Maya

SaiRam

This is a Guru Bhajan, that I learnt to sing for this year's Guru Poornima Bhajans.  It takes a little more effort to find the comfort zone for the high notes at Sai Shankara Daya Karo and He Madananthaka Dhaya Karo.  But, it is a beautiful bhajan that is worth the extra effort.

Lyrics:

Srikari Kripakari, Kshemankari Saishwari

SaiRam

This is one of my favorites among Devi bhajans.  I have been singing this song for years now, however, I don't remember the first time I heard this song.

Whenever I sang this song, one of my friends used to tease me that, this song makes him very hungry as it keeps reminding him of Curries "Shri-Curry, Kripa-Curry,.. ". Just a funny anecdote - No offense meant.

Lyrics:
Sreekari Kripakari, Kshemankari Saishwari

Ganga Jata Dhara Gauri Shankara

SaiRam

Sorry about not updating the blog with any new posts from past few days.  Everyone at home, fell sick and suffered a bout of cold and cough.  Though, I recovered from it, my voice still sounds very hoarse.  Kindly bear with me.

This is among the very early bhajans that I learnt almost 14 years ago.  It is a lovely song that I fell in love the first time I heard in the Sai baba movie.  Enjoy this in SPB's melodious voice.

Govinda Krishna Jai Gopala Krishna Jai

SaiRam. #Krishna, #Bhajan, #DevotionalSong, #GovindaKrishnaJai

This is a Krishna Bhajan.  It is a very fast and peppy song.  There are some tips, at the end, to use while practicing this song.

Though, I believe in 'God is one, Names are many'; there was a stage (very early in my life) when I was into Rama, and not a big fan of Krishna :) .  And then, my kid came along - I have been in love with Krishna ever since.  His feet reminded me of Mukunda, and I used to sing lot of Krishna songs and lullabies to him as a baby.  He is growing up to be a Krishna fan too.   He has to have his favorite Krishna's picture near his bed, before going to sleep.  And whenever we are picking out pictures or photos at a temple, he will always reach out to a Krishna's picture. :)

Tips: There are two lines that are tricky - of course, the "Gopika mala Hari pyaari".. It is a tongue twister kinda, so practicing that line a lot and staying focused helps.  The next tricky one is " Krishna Jai Rama Krishna Jai Radha Krishna Jai  Bala Krishna" - see if you can remember that sequence is Rama, Radha and Bala.. usually, I get confused with the order.  Or you can always write it down and use it as a reference.

Lyrics:
Govinda Krishna Jai, Gopala Krishna Jai, Gopala Bala Bala Radha Krishna Jai
Govinda Krishna Jai, Gopala Krishna Jai, Gopala Bala Bala Radha Krishna Jai
Krishna Jai, Krishna Jai, Krishna Jai, Krishna Krishna Krishna Krishna Jai
Krishna Jai, Krishna Jai, Krishna Jai, Krishna Krishna Krishna Krishna Jai
Gopika Mala Hari Pyari, Mayi Mira Mana Vihari, Madana Mohana Murali Dhari Krishna Jai
Gopika Mala Hari Pyari, Mayi Mira Mana Vihari, Madana Mohana Murali Dhari Krishna Jai
Krishna Jai Krishna Jai Krishna Jai, Krishna Krishna Krishna Krishna Jai
Krishna Jai Rama Krishna Jai Radha Krishna Jai Bala, Krishna Krishna Krishna Krishna Jai
(Fast)
Govinda Krishna Jai, Gopala Krishna Jai, Gopala Bala Bala Radha Krishna Jai
Krishna Jai, Krishna Jai, Krishna Jai, Krishna Krishna Krishna Krishna Jai
Gopika Mala Hari Pyari, Mayi Mira Mana Vihari, Madana Mohana Murali Dhari Krishna Jai
Gopika Mala Hari Pyari, Mayi Mira Mana Vihari, Madana Mohana Murali Dhari Krishna Jai
Krishna Jai Krishna Jai Krishna Jai, Krishna Krishna Krishna Krishna Jai
Krishna Jai Rama Krishna Jai Radha Krishna Jai Bala, Krishna Krishna Krishna Krishna Jai
(Slow Chorus)
Govinda Krishna Jai Gopala Krishna Jai

Translation:
Victory to Lord Krishna, Gopala.
Victory to the Lord of the cowherds and the Lord of Radha.
Victory to Lord Krishna, Who wears garlands offered by the gopis (devotees)
and Who is the Indweller in the heart of Mira (devotee).
Victory to the enchanting flute-player, Lord Krishna.
Victory to Thee, Oh Lord Krishna!

Jagadhodharini Mata Durga

SaiRam
#JagadhodhariniMataDurga, #DeviBhajan, #Durga, #Devi

This is a Devi Bhajan.  This bhajan could be slightly tricky only because it hits a very high note a couple of times, at "Jago Jago Ma Janani" and again at "Rana Chandi Devi" - Just make sure that you start the bhajan low, so that you can slowly elevate to a range that is comfortable for your voice.  With practice, you will figure out your comfort zone and then these bhajans will be a breeze.

Lyrics:
Jagadodharini Matha Durga Jagadodharini Ma
Jagadodharini Matha Durga Jagadodharini Ma

Jago Jago Ma Jago Jago Ma Jago Jago Ma Janani
Jago Jago Ma Jago Jago Ma Jago Jago Ma Janani

Prema mudita Mana se Kaho Rama Rama Ram

SaiRam.
#RamBhajan, #PremaMuditaManasaKaho, #RamaBhajan

This is Ram Bhajan and one of my favorites.  The Rama Rama Ram chorus at the end is very beautiful to experience.  As it is a long one, usually we just sing the lines once, without repeating it twice during the slow round.  And at the end, "Rama Rama Ram" could be done as a chorus, instead of a lead-and-follow pattern.

Lyrics:

Prema mudita mana se kaho
Rama Rama Ram, Shree Rama Rama Ram

Papa kate dukha mite, leke Rama nam
Bhava sumudra sukhada nava, eka Rama nam.

Parama Shanti Sukha nidhana, Divya Rama nam.
Niradhara ko adhara, eka Rama nam.

Parama gopya parama Divya, Mantra Rama nam
Santa hridaya sada basata Eka Rama nam.

Maata Pita Bandhu Sakha, Sabihi Rama Nam.
Bhakta Janara Jivana Dhana Eka Rama Nam

(Fast)
Prema mudita mana se kaho
Rama Rama Ram, Shree Rama Rama Ram

Papa kate dukha mite, leke Rama nam
Bhava sumudra sukhada nava, eka Rama nam.

Parama Shanti Sukha nidhana, Divya Rama nam.
Niradhara ko adhara, eka Rama nam.

Parama gopya parama Divya, Mantra Rama nam
Santa hridaya sada basata Eka Rama nam.

Maata Pita Bandhu Sakha, Sabihi Rama Nam.
Bhakta Janara Jivana Dhana Eka Rama Nam

(Faster and chorus)

Rama Rama Raam, Rama Rama Raam, Rama Rama Raam, Sri Rama Rama Raam
Rama Rama Raam, Rama Rama Raam, Rama Rama Raam, Sri Rama Rama Raam

(Slow Chorus)
Rama Rama Raam, Rama Rama Raam, Rama Rama Raam, Sri Rama Rama Raam

Translation:
Prema mudita mana se kaho Rama Rama Ram, Shree Rama Rama Ram - With heart(mind) filled with love, let us chant Lord Rama’s name.

Papa kate dukha mite, lekhe Rama nam - Whoever takes Lord Rama’s name will be cleansed of their sins and troubles.
Bhava sumudra sukhada nava, eka Rama nam. - Lord Rama's Name is like the boat that carries us across this ocean of life.

Parama Shanti Sukha nidhana, Divya Rama nam - Lord Rama's Name can bestow ultimate happiness and peace.
Niradhara ko adhara, eka Rama nam - It is the bolster to the one's who do not have support.

Parama gopya parama Divya, Mantra Rama nam - Lord Rama's Name is very well preserved and very divine.
Santa hridaya sada basata Eka Rama nam - It is the only name that is always in the heart of saints.

Maata Pita Bandhu Sakha, Sabihi Rama Nam - Lord Rama's Name is the mother, father, relative, friend and everything
Bhakta Janara Jivana Dhana Eka Rama Nam - It is the only wealth of devotees or It gives rich life to devotees.

Vanamali Vasudeva Jaganmohana Radha Ramana

SaiRam

This is a Krishna bhajan.  I heard it the first time during our Sai Zonal Youth Conference.  At the early morning hours, during Nagara sankeerthana, I heard this song with full Dhol and Joshila(enthusiastic) Ganjeera(Tambourines) and cymbals.  Oh my God, the experience was soo thrilling - I don't have the words to express it.  Of course, I had to learn this bhajan and then,  I found this great version in the internet.. This is how it would really sound, with all the instruments and if a talented singer, who could do different variations of Radhaa Ramana, sang this song.   Soak in it's beauty:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkJDC_sM_Gc

I cannot pull off so many levels, or at least I haven't tried very hard .. But, when I am leading this bhajan , in my notes I mark the places that I have to drag the note a little - Like the first time, it would be Jagan mohana radha ramana.. but second time, it is Jagan Mooohana Raadha Ramana.  Do whatever will help you to remember, because when you are leading in a crowd, you may be on an Auto-pilot mode :) and such small things guide you like a blueprint.

Lyrics:
Vanamali Vaasudeva Jaganmohana Radha Ramana
Vanamali Vaasudeva Jaganmohana Radha Ramana

Jaganmohana radha ramana
Jaganmohana radha ramana

Shashi vadhana sarasija nayana jaganmohana radha ramana

Jai Jai Vaishnavi Devi Maa

SaiRam

From my childhood, I have always liked the Vaishnavi Devi bhajans - the very energetic chorus and the whole mass euphoria would make it a very hair raising experience..

As you can see it, this is a great bhajan when there are lot of devotees and if you can pull it off, repeat the last two lines Jaya Maa, and Jaya Jaya Maa as many times, at a very fast speed (whatever level you are comfortable with) - usually I will work up a sweat by the time I am done with this bhajan :)

Lyrics:
(Saying "Jai Jagaj-janani Sai Maa" in the fast round is a little bit tricky; practice several times to get the flow)

Jai Jai Vaishnavi Devi Maa, Jai Jai Vaishnavi Devi Maa
Jai Jai Vaishnavi Devi Maa, Jai Jai Vaishnavi Devi Maa

Jai Maa, Jai Maa, Jai Maa, Sai Maa
Jai Maa, Jai Maa, Jai Maa, Sai Maa

Jai Jai Vaishnavi Devi Maa, Jai Jai Vaishnavi Devi Maa
Jai Jai Vaishnavi Devi Maa, Jai Jai Vaishnavi Devi Maa

Sherawaali Maa, Jyotaawaali Maa
Sherawaali Maa, Jyotaawaali Maa

Pahadawaali Maa, Jai Jagajjanani Sai Maa
Pahadawaali Maa, Jai Jagajjanani Sai Maa

Jai Maa, Jai Maa, Jai Maa, Sai Maa
Jai Jai Maa, Jai Jai Maa, Jai Jai Maa, Sai Maa

(Fast Beat)
Jai Jai Vaishnavi Devi Maa, Jai Jai Vaishnavi Devi Maa
Jai Maa, Jai Maa, Jai Maa, Sai Maa
Jai Jai Vaishnavi Devi Maa, Jai Jai Vaishnavi Devi Maa
Sherawaali Maa, Jyotaawaali Maa
Pahadawaali Maa, Jai Jagajjanani Sai Maa
Jai Maa, Jai Maa, Jai Maa, Sai Maa
Jai Jai Maa, Jai Jai Maa, Jai Jai Maa, Sai Maa

(Slow Chorus)
Jai Jai Vaishnavi Devi Maa, Jai Jai Vaishnavi Devi Maa

Translation:
Victory to the Supreme Energy principle who manifests as the three divine mothers (Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati) in the holy Vaishnavi Devi shrine.
Victory to the Supreme Energy principle who on earth assumed the form of Sai.
O Mother! You are the Most Effulgent One who shines brilliantly (Jyotaawali), the Powerful One who has the lion as her vehicle (Sherawaali).
O Divine Mother Sai! You are the Mother of this World who resides in the mountains of Trikoota as Vaishnav Devi (Pahadawaali).
Victory to the Divine Mother, Victory to Sai!
Victory to the Mother! Victory to Lord Sai!

Ayodhya Vaasi Raam Raam Raam Dasaratha Nandana Raam

Sairam

This is a bhajan on Sri Rama. You may be looking for "Ayodhya Vasi Ram Ram Ram Dasaratha Nandana Ram" - I have changed it slightly to suit the phonetics while singing.

It is very simple with just two lines.  We repeat the two lines in different scales two times - pretty simple to pick up with little practice.  A small tip is, if you start the first scale low, the next one will not be too high to hit.

Lyrics:
(Low)
Ayodhya Vaasi Raam Raam Raam Dasharatha Nandana Raam
Ayodhya Vaasi Raam Raam Raam Dasharatha Nandana Raam

Patheetha Paavana Janaki Jeevana Seetha Mohana Raam

(Slow Chorus)
Ayodhya Vaasi Raam Raam Raam Dasharatha Nandana Raam

Bolo Bolo Sab Mil Bolo, Om Namah Shivaaya

SaiRam

This is a Shiva bhajan, a generic one (As always, you can find more generic ones listed at the Generic Bhajans Page ) .

This one sounds awesome when there is a large crowd.  The "Om Namah Shivaya" is repeated 5 times at the end of the Bhajan, that really works the crowd into a frenzy :) and then when you end the bhajan with a very slow chorus line, it is so calming! It is as if you are enveloped by Peace all around... Absolutely Love it!

Lyrics:

Bolo Bolo Sab Mil Bolo, Om Namah Shivaaya
Bolo Bolo Sab Mil Bolo, Om Namah Shivaaya

Om Namah Shivaaya, Om Namah Shivaaya

Bolo Bolo Sab Mil Bolo, Om Namah Shivaaya

Jhoot Jataa Mein Gangaa Dhaari
Jhoot Jataa Mein Gangaa Dhaari

Thrishoola Dhaari Damaru Bhajaave
Thrishoola Dhaari Damaru Bhajaave

Dama Dama Dama Dama Damaru Bhajaa
Dama Dama Dama Dama Damaru Bhajaa

Goonjh Uthaa Om Namah Shivaaya
Goonjh Uthaa Om Namah Shivaaya

Bolo Bolo Sab Mil Bolo, Om Namah Shivaaya

Jhoot Jataa Mein Gangaa Dhaari

Thrishoola Dhaari Damaru Bhajaave

Dama Dama Dama Dama Damaru Bhajaa

Goonjh Uthaa Om Namah Shivaaya
(Increasing the scale? gradually - is it pitch or scale?  Never got the theory part :) )
Om Namah Shivaaya,
Om Namah Shivaaya,
Om Namah Shivaaya, (Ignore if it is too high, next ones are on low scale)
Om Namah Shivaaya,
Om Namah Shivaaya,

(Slow Chorus)
Bolo Bolo Sab Mil Bolo, Om Namah Shivaaya

Translation:
Bolo Bolo Sab Mil Bolo - Let us all sing "Om Namah Shivaaya" (I bow down to Shiva)

Jhoot Jataa Mein Gangaa Dhaari - Shiva, the one who carries River Ganga in his locks

Thrishoola Dhaari Damaru Bhajaave - The one who carries the trident and beats the drums

This one is a generic bhajan - If you are not a Sai devotee or if you are in a group who may be uncomfortable with "Sai" and wanna sing a song that doesn't have "Sai" in it (Hey, when I am singing bhajans, I don't want to make anyone feel uncomfortable - I can always sing Krishna Rama for them, while thinking of my Sai Krishna and Sai Rama :) ), this is your song.  If you are looking for such songs, click on the tab for "Generic Bhajans" and you will find them listed.  Or contact me and I will try my best to upload a bhajan of deity of your choice.

At your feet dear Lord, we pray

SaiRam

I learnt this English bhajan from one of the devotees who visits the center.  I love this bhajan so much, and am planning on singing this for Swami's bday this year - wish me luck :)

There are some versions with "Bless us with your love this day" instead of "Grace us" .. I sometimes absent-mindedly interchange but either way, He sure will shower his grace and bless us :)

Lyrics:
At Your Feet Dear Lord We pray, Grace Us With Your Love This Day
At Your Feet Dear Lord We pray, Grace Us With Your Love This Day

Sai Baba, Sai Baba, You Are Krishna, You Are Rama
Sai Baba, Sai Baba, You Are Krishna, You Are Rama

Oh Baba, Oh Baba, You Are Mother, You Are Father
Oh Baba, Oh Baba, You Are Mother, You Are Father

All Names, Every Form, All That Was And Will Be Born
You are All Names, Every Form, All That Is Forever More

(Fast)
At Your Feet Dear Lord We pray, Grace Us With Your Love This Day

SaiRam
This bhajan, Mother O Mother Sai Maa, is an English Bhajan that I frequently sing at our center - It is simple and straightforward, and feels like coming straight from the heart. I love the feeling this bhajan evokes - a sense of gratitude, love towards mother and above all a proximity to our dear Sai, as we see Him as our dear mother.
As always, the lyrics is expanded to show the lines repeating twice during the slow speed and then going once during the fast speed.

Lyrics:
Mother O Mother Sai Maa, you mean the whole world to me, Sai Maa
Mother O Mother Sai Maa, you mean the whole world to me, Sai Maa

(In next line, the tune of Mother o Mother sai maa is slightly different from above; Sai Maa should be prolonged)
Mother O Mother Sai Maaaa, You are the light of my life, Sai Maa
Mother O Mother Sai Maaaa, You are the light of my life, Sai Maa

Maaa Sai Maaa, Maaa Sai Maaa
Maaa Saayee Maaa, Maaa Sai Maaa

In times of darkness and despair, I call your name; you are always there
In times of darkness and despair, I call your name; you are always there

How can I thank you, O dear Sai Maa, for all your patience and love, Sai Maa
How can I thank you, O dear Sai Maa, for all your patience and love, Sai Maa

Maaa Sai Maaa, Maaa Sai Maaa
Maaa Saayee Maaa, Maaa Sai Maaa

(Fast Beat)
Mother O Mother Sai Maa, you mean the whole world to me, Sai Maa
Mother O Mother Sai Maaaa, You are the light of my life, Sai Maa
Maaa Sai Maaa, Maaa Sai Maaa
Maaa Saayee Maaa, Maaa Sai Maaa
In times of darkness and despair, I call your name; you are always there
How can I thank you, O dear Sai Maa, for all your patience and love, Sai Maa
Maaa Sai Maaa, Maaa Sai Maaa
Maaa Saayee Maaa, Maaa Sai Maaa

(Chorus and very slow)
Mother O Mother Sai Maa, you mean the whole world to me, Sai Maa

Jai Durga Lakshmi Saraswathi

SaiRam

As we usually sing at the Sai centers, I started my series with Ganesha Bhajan, and then followed it with a Guru bhajan.  Now, it is turn for Devi bhajan and I picked Jai Durga Lakshmi Saraswathi, mainly because it is a very simple and easy bhajan to learn.  Give it a try and I am sure you would love it too.

I have expanded the lyrics to show the repetitions just as I sing.
Lyrics:
(Slow)
Jai Durga Lakshmi Saraswathi Sai Jaganmatha
Jai Durga Lakshmi Saraswathi Sai Jaganmatha
Sai Jaganmatha Maam Pahi Jaganmatha

Sai Jaganmatha Maam Pahi Jaganmatha
Sai Jaganmatha Maam Pahi Jaganmatha
Sai Jaganmatha Maam Pahi Jaganmatha

(Fast Beat)
Jai Durga Lakshmi Saraswathi Sai Jaganmatha
Sai Jaganmatha Maam Pahi Jaganmatha
Sai Jaganmatha Maam Pahi Jaganmatha

Meaning:
Glory to Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswati and Sai;
Sai, Divine Mother of the Universe, protect me.
(Lyrics and Translation from Prashanthi Mandir Bhajans)

Sheetala Charanam

SaiRam

The next bhajan is about Guru.  It is one of my personal favorites - it describes the feet of our Guru, so tender, so soft, so comforting..

Lyrics:
1. Sheetala Charanam Komala Charanam Manjula Charanam Mama Guru Charanam
Our obeisance to the cool, tender and charming lotus feet of the Supreme Preceptor

2. Mridula Charanam Anugraha Charanam
Our obeisance to the delicate feet of the Lord – the feet that fills us with grace

3. Sadguru Charanam Sadaa Smaraami
We offer our salutations at the lotus feet of the Sadguru - the Supreme Preceptor, always.

4. Prema Daataa Sai Guru Natha
O Lord Sai! The Supreme Teacher and the provider of Inexhaustible Divine Love

5. Paavana Charanam Sadaa Bhajaami
We offer salutations and glorify always the most sacred feet of the Lord Supreme

Though, these are the lines for the bhajans, I always write it down exactly as I sing, so that I don't have to remember what to repeat and what not to.  So, here is my expanded version:

(Slow)
Sheetala Charanam Komala Charanam Manjula Charanam Mama Guru Charanam
Sheetala Charanam Komala Charanam Manjula Charanam Mama Guru Charanam
Mridula Charanam Anugraha Charanam
Mridula Charanam Anugraha Charanam
Sadguru Charanam Sadaa Smaraami
Sadguru Charanam Sadaa Smaraami

Prema Daataa Sai Guru Natha
Prema Daataa Sai Guru Natha
Paavana Charanam Sadaa Bhajaami
Paavana Charanam Sadaa Bhajaami

(Fast beat)
Sheetala Charanam Komala Charanam Manjula Charanam Mama Guru Charanam
Mridula Charanam Anugraha Charanam
Sadguru Charanam Sadaa Smaraami

Prema Daataa Sai Guru Natha
Paavana Charanam Sadaa Bhajaami

Ganesha Sharanam

SaiRam

The first bhajan in this blog is Ganesha's, of course.  We start our work with worshipping Ganesh, the Lord who removes any obstacles.

This is a very simple bhajan with only two lines.  But the lines are repeated in different ways as shown in the audio clip.

The usual practice is to sing the bhajan at slow pace.  After every line, the crowd will repeat that line.  The lead signer repeats the same line again, in the sense, each line is repeated twice the first time.  The second time around, it is fast paced and the lines are sang only once; the crowd repeats after the lead singer after every line.

I am still figuring out how to simulate the crowd repetition, etc.  Please bear with me, while I work out those kinks.  So, in this audio clip, every line is repeated twice - both the slow paced and fast paced.  Hope it is clear.  If you have any comments or questions, please feel free to ask.

Here is the bhajan - Enjoy!

At the lotus feet of my dear Lord..

SaiRam

This is my first post in the blog.  Let me start by setting intention for this blog - With Swami's grace and blessings, I hope that this blog helps and inspires anyone and everyone, who are interested in singing Bhajans or devotional songs, to start practising and singing bhajans.  I have absolutely no background in music when I started singing bhajans.  But as they say, with practice, anything is possible.  Hope this blog inspires you to do the same.  Sairam.  And with that, let me offer this at the Lotus feet of our dear beloved Swami.  May Swami guide us through this journey.

"Devotional Singing or Bhajans is the process of singing that originates in the heart, not from the lips or the tongue. It is the expression of the joyous thrill that wells up from the heart when the Glory of God is remembered. It is the spontaneous manifestation of inner ecstasy. No attention is paid to the blame or praise that others may give. It does not seek the admiration or the appreciation of the listeners."
- Sathya Sai Baba  (Satya Sai Speaks, X, 84)
